Traditionally
Gretna Green has been famous for weddings for 250 years
when in the past couples could get married at the age of
16 in front of two witnesses.
Then the first house
over the border was the blacksmith house and couples were
married
over the anvil.The law was later appealed but the tradition
of marriages in Gretna carried on with marriages in Scotland
still being carried out over the anvil. Marriages can
be carried out anywhere.
